Every replacement door falls into one of two categories, and the difference isn't the wood grain or finish. It's what you're actually buying.
A pre-hung door is a complete unit assembled before it ever reaches the opening. The manufacturer mounts the panel into its own frame at the factory, sets the hinges into pre-cut mortises, and on most units bores the panel for a specific lockset before it ships. What arrives is one assembly: panel, jamb, and often the exterior brickmold or interior casing already attached. Installing it means removing the old frame down to the rough opening, then setting the new frame into that hole, plumbing and squaring it with shims before fastening and trimming it out.
A slab door is just the panel, the flat leaf that swings, with no frame attached. It ships as a wood, steel, or fiberglass rectangle, sometimes with hinge mortises and a lockset bore already cut to standard spacing, sometimes left blank. A slab is built to hang on a jamb already standing in the opening, either the existing frame and hinges, or hardware transferred over from the old door. Nothing about the wall opening changes. Only the panel does.

When a Pre-Hung Unit Is the Right Call
A pre-hung door earns its extra labor when the problem sits in the frame, not just the panel.
Rot or water damage in the jamb: Wood jambs at exterior openings take the brunt of years of rain and runoff at the sill and the bottom of the side jambs. Once that wood has softened or crumbled, a new slab hung on it is only as solid as the framing holding the hinges, and hinge screws don't grip rotted wood any better than they grip cardboard.
A frame that's out of square: Houses settle, and an opening that was square when it was framed can rack out of true over the years, especially in older construction where the foundation and framing have had decades to move. A slab door built for a square opening won't hang correctly in a frame that's turned into a parallelogram. A pre-hung unit lets the installer build a new, square reference inside that irregular rough opening instead of fighting the old one.
Changing the door's size or swing direction: If you're widening a doorway, switching from a right-hand to a left-hand swing, or moving from a standard door to one with a taller or wider panel, the existing jamb was built for a different door entirely. Only a new frame, sized and hung for the new panel, makes that change possible. A slab door can't change the opening it hangs in; it can only fill the one that's already there.
When a Slab-Only Door Makes Sense
A slab door is the lighter job, in materials and disruption, but it only works when the frame underneath has earned that trust.
The existing jamb is still square, plumb, and solid: If the frame that's already in the wall was hung correctly to begin with and hasn't shifted or rotted since, there's no reason to tear it out along with a panel that's simply worn through its finish, warped, or been damaged by an impact. The jamb, hinges, and often the lockset hardware all carry over.
Keeping the casing and trim intact matters to you: Pulling a full frame means pulling the casing around it too, which means new paint or stain, new caulk lines, and sometimes patching drywall or plaster where the old casing pulled away trim nails. A slab swap leaves all of that alone; only the panel itself changes.
The jamb has to earn that trust, not just be assumed sound: A carpenter fitting a slab has to confirm the opening is actually true, not just close enough by eye. A jamb that's slightly out of square, even by a fraction of an inch over the height of the door, will show up as a gap at one corner or a panel that binds against the stop the moment the slab is hung. Slab-only replacement is the right move when that's confirmed by measuring the opening first, not assumed because the old door happened to still close.
The Install Skill Difference: Setting a Frame vs. Fitting a Panel
The two jobs ask a carpenter for different kinds of precision, and neither is the easier version of the other.
Setting a pre-hung frame means working from nothing: the rough opening is just an oversized hole in the wall framing. The installer sets the new frame into it and shims behind the hinge jamb and latch jamb to bring the whole thing plumb in two directions and square at every corner, checking with a level before a single fastener goes through the jamb. Get that shimming wrong, and the door will bind, sag, or fail to latch for the life of the installation, no matter how good the panel itself is.
Fitting a slab is a different discipline. The opening already exists, hinges and all, and the job is making one panel match hardware and dimensions set months or years ago by a different door. That can mean planing an edge in thin passes to close a gap, deepening or shifting a hinge mortise so the new panel's leaf lines up with the jambs, or squaring a slightly out-of-flat corner so the door clears the threshold. It's finish carpentry against an opening that won't move, not framing carpentry building a new reference.
Where a Slab Order Goes Wrong: Hinges and Lockset Alignment
Ordering a slab door without checking it against the hardware already in the opening is the single most common way a simple swap turns into an unplanned repair.
Hinge mortises, the notched recesses where each hinge leaf sits, come in a handful of standard sizes, but "standard" covers a range of heights, widths, and mortise depths. A slab pre-cut to one manufacturer's spacing doesn't automatically match the mortise depth already cut into an existing jamb, especially on an older house where the original hardware may predate current sizing. When the mortises don't line up, the carpenter has to deepen, shift, or fill and re-cut them by hand before the panel hangs flush.
The lockset bore has the same problem. Most prepped slabs ship with a bore sized for a common backset, the distance from the door's edge to the center of the lockset, but older doors sometimes used a different backset than what's typical today. A bore off by even half an inch from where the existing strike plate sits means the latch won't reach it, and re-boring a hole that's already cut in the wrong spot weakens the door edge rather than correcting the problem cleanly.
Both problems are avoidable, but only if someone measures the existing hinge spacing, mortise depth, and lockset backset before the new slab is ordered, not after it arrives and doesn't fit.
