Some shower leaks never touch the grout. The valve behind the handle lives inside the wall, and when its seals start to weep, the water runs down the back of the tile where nobody sees it until a stain or a soft spot turns up somewhere else. On a Hockessin shower, that hidden leak is worth ruling in or out before any tile comes off.

The valve is checked on its own, apart from any grout or pan leak. The rest of the shower is tested after that, and the price follows the test.

Plumbing and tile from one family

Jimmy and his son do the valve repair and the tile that closes over it.

Parts matched to your valve

Cartridges and trim are chosen to fit the valve body in the wall.

Shower arm refitted

The arm behind the head is resealed or replaced while the wall is open.

Behind the Handle: Where a Shower Valve Leaks

A tiled shower can leak through its surface, through its pan, or through the plumbing in the wall. The third is the hardest to see, and it is the one this repair goes after.

What the valve is made of

A shower valve is a brass or copper body joined to the hot and cold supply pipes, with a pipe rising out of it to the shower arm and, on a tub, one dropping to the spout. Inside the body sits a cartridge or stem that mixes the water and shuts it off, sealed by rubber O-rings and washers. The handle and the trim plate cover an opening in the tile and backer, and that hole has to be sealed too. Water can get out at any of those places: past a worn seal into the body cavity, at a joint where a pipe meets the body, or around the trim when spray hits the wall.

Hard well water and the shower valve in Hockessin

Hockessin's well water is very hard. In a shower, a stiff handle is one sign the cartridge is wearing, and it is worth having looked at before the wall behind it gets wet. Hardness does not explain a cracked grout line or a failed pan, so the walls and the floor get their own part of the test.

Reaching the valve and closing the wall

There are two ways in. Where a closet or bedroom backs onto the shower wall, the drywall on that side is opened while the tile is left untouched. Where it isn't, the tile around the valve is removed, and the hole is filled with backer and membrane, then retiled, or covered by a larger trim plate made for the valve. A cartridge is replaced when the valve is sound, and parts still fit it. When the body itself is corroded or no replacement cartridge is available, the valve body is cut out and a new one installed.

Getting to the Valve and Closing It Up

1

Tell Jimmy how the shower behaves

A head that drips after it's shut off or a stain that shows up after showers: each one points somewhere, so mention all of it when you call or text.

2

Jimmy's visit

At the visit, the whole shower is tested, valve included, and you hear what the test found before you see a price.

3

Opening the wall

Your floors are protected with drop cloths and runners up to the bathroom. The wall is opened, and the cartridge or valve body is replaced.

4

Closed, retiled and run

The opening is closed with backer, membrane and tile, or with a drywall patch left ready for paint. When the grout and caulk are set, the valve is run again and checked.

Shower Valve Questions From Hockessin Homeowners

It points to the diverter, the part that sends water up to the head, or to a spout that has worked loose. On some valves, the diverter is built into the same cartridge, so it is checked along with the valve.

A drip that keeps going long after the water is off means the cartridge is no longer closing completely, and water lands in the shower.

The house water is shut off while the old body is cut out and the new one connected, and it goes back on once the joints are made and checked, before the wall is closed. A cartridge swap requires the water to be off only for the swap itself.

It can. A pressure-balancing valve holds the temperature steadier when someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap elsewhere in the house. Which valve goes in is chosen with you at the estimate.

Yes, as long as the trim is made for the valve that ends up in the wall. If you are buying it yourself, check the brand and model with Jimmy first.

If a remodel is close, the valve can be replaced as part of it. If it is a year or more away, fixing the valve now keeps the framing behind the tile sound for the remodel.

Pricing a Valve or Tile Repair in Hockessin

  • Scope

Shower leak, valve and tile repair

    Price range$1,000 to $3,000
  • Scope

Starting over with a custom tile shower

    Price range$6,000 to $12,000

Behind a Hockessin shower handle, access is the first thing that moves the cost. A cartridge swapped from the front, with no wall opened, can fall under our small-job rate: $100 for the service call and $25 per 15 minutes of work. A closet or bedroom wall behind the shower ends in a drywall patch. Coming through the tile means retiling the opening, and any grout or caulk the test turns up beside the valve is added to that.

Jimmy prices every project in person at your home, never from a photo or a text. Project estimates are free and are usually scheduled in the evening.

Our warranty

Our work carries a one-year workmanship warranty, dated from the day the job is finished.
