Exterior Wood Rot Repair in Wilmington, DE
- Rotted Trim, Porch Columns and Window Frames
- Siding Sections Replaced
- New Wood Primed on Both Faces
In-person estimates across northern Delaware.

Paint is good at hiding rot. A window sill that looks fine from the driveway may be soft enough to dent with a thumbnail, and a porch column can be hollow at the base beneath fresh white paint. By the time a board sags, water has been at it for a long time.
Precision Home Worx repairs rotted exterior wood on houses in Wilmington and the surrounding towns: rotted trim and columns, soft window frames and sills, and damaged siding. Jimmy Grubb cuts out the rotted wood and rebuilds the area with new material, primed on both sides, so the repair is sound and ready for paint.
Trim and Siding Work You Can Look Up
Tested before it's priced
The quote rests on how far the soft wood actually runs, not on how the paint looks.
The water's route traced
Jimmy looks for the open joint or failed caulk line that let the rain in.
No subcontractors on your trim
Jimmy and his son do the carpentry themselves, start to finish.
Three Parts of a House Where Wood Rot Starts
Rot needs wood that stays wet, so it starts where water can sit, and the wood cannot dry out. On a house, that means three areas, each with its own way of failing.
Window sills, frames and trim boards
A window sill is shaped to shed rain, but once the paint cracks at a joint, water soaks into the end grain and stays there long after the surface dries. The same thing happens at the foot of corner boards, along the bottom edge of window casings, and wherever trim meets a porch floor or a roof. We cut out the rotted length and fit new stock, matched to the old trim as closely as available stock allows, so the new piece sheds water the way the first one was meant to.
Rot in the frame around an entry door, from the sill up the jamb legs, is covered on our door jamb page.
rotted door jamb repairPorch columns and posts
A porch column supports part of the porch roof, so rot at its base is as much a structural problem as a cosmetic one. Hollow wood columns tend to fail from the bottom up, where the base sits in rain and snowmelt on the porch floor. How much of the shaft has gone soft is what tells Jimmy whether the base can be rebuilt or the column has to be replaced. If a column has to be removed, the roof above it is supported where needed while it is removed.
- Warning signs: a crumbling or spongy base, a gap opening under the top of the column or paint that keeps blistering in the same low spot.
Siding sections and shutters
Siding gives out in patches: under a window that has been leaking, beside a chimney or along the lowest course where splashback off the ground keeps the boards wet. We remove the damaged boards, inspect what is behind them, and fit new boards into the run.
Shutters hang on those same walls; hanging new ones and re-hanging loose or worn pairs is its own job.
shutter installationRot at the roof edge
Soffit and fascia, the boards under and along the eaves, rot for the same reasons as the rest of the trim. That roof-edge work, including trim returns at the corners, has a page of its own.
soffit and fascia repairWhat gets saved and what gets cut out
Jimmy presses the tip of a Phillips screwdriver into the wood, starting at the worst spot and working outward until the tip stops sinking and meets firm fiber. That line between soft and sound shows how far the rot really runs, and it is how he works out, at the estimate, which pieces are repaired and which are replaced.
He also looks for the water, because rot means a leak somewhere above or behind it: an open miter, a failed caulk line, a sill that has settled and now pitches toward the house. Repairing rot at the source means dealing with that entry point as well as the wood, or the new board gets wet the same way the old one did.
Matching columns on a row of Wilmington porches
On a Wilmington row home, the front porch sits in a line with the porches next door, and where the columns match from house to house, a new one has to match the row as well. A turned column is shaped on a lathe, and where it meets the porch floor, its end grain faces straight down. End grain soaks up water the way a bundle of straws does, and a porch floor that holds a puddle after rain keeps that end wet for days. A turned profile that matches the neighbors' is hard to buy off the shelf, which is why the probe matters here. Finding exactly where the sound wood starts lets the original column stay up and keep the row's look wherever it can.
Four Stages of a Rot Repair at Your House
Point out the problem spots
Call or text Jimmy to let him know where you've seen soft wood, peeling paint, or a loose shutter. The in-home visit is booked from there.
The walk-around and the probe
At the house, Jimmy checks each spot you mentioned and the surrounding trim, probing to find the edges of the rot. He shows you what is soft and what is sound, then prices the repair from what he found.
A start date
Once you say yes, the job goes on the calendar. Right now the schedule runs about six weeks out.
Cut out and rebuild
Rotted wood is removed back to solid material, and new pieces are cut, fitted, and fastened in place. Any soft framing behind a board is included in the same repair.
The Exterior Wood We Rebuild
| Area of the house | What we do | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Window sills | Rotted section repaired, or the sill replaced | Set by what the probe finds |
| Window frames and casings | Rotted lengths replaced | Profile matched to the old trim where it can be |
| Corner boards and trim boards | Repaired in sections or replaced | Seams caulked where needed |
| Porch columns and posts | Base rebuilt or column replaced | Temporary roof support planned at the estimate |
| Siding | Damaged boards replaced | Wood behind them checked too |
| Shutters | Hung, re-hung or replaced | Shutters you bought yourself can be hung too |
| Primer | Applied to new wood front and back | Ready for your painter |
| Shingle roofing | Not included | The only roofs we build are over decks, porches, and front entries |
Painting the house's siding, trim, or doors is not our work, so each repair is left primed for your painter. Shingle roofing is outside our scope of work, too.

What Jimmy quotesPriced at the estimate, after the probe
A single small task, like a smoke detector or a lock, is a $100 service call plus $25 for every 15 minutes of work.
At the light end of rot work, a short length of flat trim comes out, and one new board goes in. A sill that runs under a window frame, a column supporting a porch roof, or a molded profile built from several pieces requires more labor and more material. Siding and shutter work grows with the number of boards or shutters involved.
Hourly work is billed at $75 an hour for a skilled craftsman and $25 an hour for a general assistant, with a four-hour minimum on most jobs.
Jimmy prices every project in person at your home, never from a photo or a text. Project estimates are free and are usually scheduled in the evening.

A Wilmington-Area Review of Rot and Siding Work
A water-damaged shed rehabbed and siding fixed by the chimney
Steven Crissman, Google review, June 2026
“Precision just rehabbed my shed. The front walls & doors had gotten significantly damaged by water over time and were starting to rot badly. Jimmy the owner was in constant communication and spent an extra day making sure everything was perfect. It looked like I had a brand new shed when it was finished! He also took extra time to look at another issue with some siding on my house up by the chimney and was able to fix that as well.”

What Homeowners Ask About Soft Exterior Wood
Rot leaves wood soft, stringy, or crumbly. Insects leave tunnels or galleries, sometimes with sawdust-like debris below them. If Jimmy's probe opens up tunnels, the insects have to be treated before new wood goes in. Otherwise they move straight into the repair.
Sometimes. A sill carries the window frame at each end, so where the rot sits matters as much as how much there is. Soft wood at the front edge is a smaller repair than rot that has worked back under the frame, where removing the sill requires more care around the window.
It can be. If only the base trim gives, that is an early warning. A column that takes a screwdriver deep into the shaft, or one with a gap opening at the top, may no longer be carrying its share of the roof. If the beam over a column has started to sag, stay out from under it until it has been looked at.
Fix it first. Paint brushed over soft wood seals in moisture, and the new paint fails in the same spot. Doing the carpentry before the painter arrives gives them solid wood to paint.
Then the sill or casing repair is no longer the answer. When the probe shows soft wood running up the frame that holds the sash, rebuilding around it leaves a weak window in a new surround, and replacing the window is the sounder fix. Jimmy shows you where the soft wood ends before you decide, and window replacement has its own page.
Point Jimmy to the Soft Spots
A screwdriver that sinks into the trim, a sill, or the foot of a porch column means the wood has gone soft. Call or text Jimmy with where you found it, and the estimate visit starts there.
