A deck is only worth sitting on when the bugs leave you alone. A screened room fixes that, as long as the screen is the only way in. Torn mesh is easy to spot; the cracks at a post or along the house wall are what let a porch down.

A tight room is the goal on a Bear porch, whether the job starts with an open attached deck or an old screened porch due for new mesh and some new wood.

Floor gaps checked

Bugs come up between deck boards, so the floor is looked at with the walls.

Cracks the mesh cannot cover

Joints at posts, along the siding, and up at the roof framing are checked.

Torn mesh found opening by opening

Each opening is checked, and what needs new screen is listed on the written estimate.

A Screen Room Only Works If the Screen Is the Only Way In

New mesh on every opening is the easy part. Insects can also come in where nobody put screen at all, and finding those spots is part of every job.

The floor is a screen wall too

Deck boards are laid with gaps between them so water can drain and the wood can dry. On an open deck, that does no harm. Once walls go up, every gap becomes a path for insects rising from the shaded ground below. There are two common ways to close it: screen stretched across the tops of the joists before the boards go down, or, on a low deck, screen fastened around its edges to close in the space underneath. Which one fits your deck, if either, is worth going over with Jimmy when he comes out.

Lifting boards on an existing deck to screen beneath them is also the moment to replace any that have gone soft and to inspect the joists beneath.

Posts, the house wall and the ceiling line

Screen ends where it meets a post, a beam or the side of the house, and each of those joints can leave a crack. Posts that have twisted as they dried open a gap along one edge of the mesh. Siding has a stepped face, so a screen wall built against it needs trim fitted to that face. Up at the ceiling, the space between the top rail and the roof framing can leave a gap too. How each joint is closed is covered in the estimate, and those small pieces determine whether the room is tight.

Joints also open up with time. Wood swells in humid weather and shrinks back in dry spells, and a post or rail that was snug against the mesh the day it went in can pull away a season or two later. That is why an older screened porch that lets bugs in may need its joints closed again more than it needs new screen.

In Bear backyards, the mosquito, a screened room has to stop

The Asian tiger mosquito, Delaware's newest and toughest nuisance mosquito, is a daytime species that breeds in small amounts of standing water, like a plant saucer, and flies only about 300 feet from where it breeds.

You can empty your own saucers and still share the block with a neighbor's, so a screened room is the part you control. Because this mosquito is out in the daytime, the room has to be tight at noon and at dusk. On an attached deck, the screened room also counts as building work with New Castle County.

Bugs and Screen Rooms: What Bear Homeowners Ask

No room stays sealed while its door is propped open. With the door shut, what remains is an unscreened floor or an open joint, and both are looked at.

Anything that holds a little water for a few days: plant saucers, buckets, tarps, toys, a birdbath that never gets changed.

Mesh comes in more than one weave, and a tighter one trades a little airflow and view for smaller openings. Jimmy can show you the weaves side by side.

With a mosquito that is out at midday, a door left ajar while hands are full lets them straight in. A door that swings shut by itself closes that gap, and it is worth raising when Jimmy comes out.

Yes. Anything larger than the mesh openings is stopped by the walls, so the same joints that matter for mosquitoes also matter for them.

Sit inside on a bright afternoon and look along each post, where the wall meets the siding and up where the walls meet the roof. Daylight showing through a joint marks a gap, and so do insects resting just inside it.

Building a Tight Room on a Bear Deck

1

A call about the deck

Tell Jimmy whether you are rescreening, fixing a porch, or enclosing a deck. Give a rough size too.

2

The gap check

At the estimate, he walks the floor and the house wall looking for openings, and looks over the framing for soft wood. The written price follows.

3

Frame, walls and trim

Repairs come first, then the wall framing and, where there is one, the roof. The joints at the posts and the house get the finish you picked.

4

A final look at the joints

Each joint where the screen meets the wood is checked before Jimmy packs up.
