Quartz countertop replacement with undermount sink in Wilmington, DE by Precision Home Worx
Quartz Countertops project by Precision Home Worx near Wilmington, DE
Finished quartz countertops work by Precision Home Worx

New countertops change a kitchen without tearing it apart. When the cabinets are sound, but the laminate is chipped, the seams are lifting, or the old granite simply isn't your taste, replacing the tops gives you a new work surface, a new sink and a cleaner line along the wall.

Replacing countertops starts underneath them, with the cabinets that will carry the weight. Our part of the job is everything around the stone: removing the old tops, preparing the cabinets, and restoring the sink and faucet to working order.

Level cabinets under heavy stone

The boxes have to sit level under the weight, and Jimmy checks that.

Island cooktop swaps

An island downdraft cooktop with a pop-up vent can be replaced in the framing already there.

The sink drain, supply lines, and faucet are reconnected and run.

Stone Is Never Flatter Than the Cabinets Under It

A new top is only as good as the boxes it rests on, so a countertop job starts with the cabinets and ends with the stone.

What happens before the template

Stone shows every flaw in the cabinets under it. A countertop that sits on a high corner can rock, and a slab that bridges a low spot is under strain. Once the old tops come off, Jimmy checks each box for level and for a solid bottom and frame. Where a cabinet sits low, rocks, or has a weak sink base, that work is priced at the estimate and done before the template is made. Stone can't take a screw the way a laminate top can, so a dishwasher that was fastened to the old top needs another way to attach.

The materials we install

Quartz and granite are the two stones we replace tops with, and butcher block and laminate are options too.

Quartz

Quartz is an engineered slab of crushed natural quartz bound with resin. It is dense and non-porous, needs no sealing, and comes in consistent colors, including clean whites and marble looks. Its weak spot is heat: the resin can scorch under a pot set straight from the burner, so a trivet stays by the stove.

Granite

Granite is quarried stone, so no two slabs match. It takes heat better than quartz, but it has some porosity, and a periodic sealer keeps oil and wine from soaking in. A slab with bold veining is worth seeing before it is cut, since the pattern is laid out along your counters at the template.

Quartz vs. granite countertops

Butcher block and laminate

Butcher block is hardwood strips glued into a top. It can be sanded and re-oiled when it wears, and it needs that oil to stay sealed. Laminate is a printed surface bonded to a substrate. It is light and quick to install, but it is hard to repair once the surface chips or a seam swells.

Islands with a downdraft already framed

An island with a downdraft cooktop in the middle already holds what a swap needs: a cooktop opening, framing around it, and a path for the vent below the counter. That is why these jobs are normally replacements: a new cooktop with a pop-up vent fitted into the existing framing. The vent rises from the counter behind the burners and drops back out of sight when it is off, so the new top has to be cut with room for the vent as well as the burners. That cutout is laid out to the new unit's size rather than the old opening's, since a new cooktop may not match the old one to the inch.

Getting a slab into a narrow Wilmington house

Stone arrives as finished pieces, and each one has to be carried on edge from the truck to the kitchen. In a narrow Wilmington house with the kitchen at the back, that path runs through the front door and down a hall, or in through a back door off a small yard, and every turn limits how long a piece can be. On a long run of counter, that can decide where a seam has to fall. Jimmy walks the route per the estimate, so the stone is cut into pieces that can fit into the house, and the seam lands where you have agreed to it.

How Your New Counters Go In

1

Start with what's there now

Call or text Jimmy with a picture in words: the counters you have, the ones you want, and whether the sink, faucet, or backsplash will change.

2

The estimate in your kitchen

Jimmy measures the runs and the island and opens the sink base to see the plumbing and the cabinet floor.

3

Choose the material

You pick the quartz, granite, butcher block, or laminate; the color and edge; and the sink and faucet.

4

Old tops out, cabinets readied

The old countertops and sink come out, and any cabinet that needs work is repaired.

5

Template and fabrication

The fabricator templates the readied cabinets and cuts the stone to that template, including sink and cooktop cutouts.

6

Sink and faucet back in service

The new tops go in, and the sink and faucet are reconnected. Then the backsplash is tied in, and Jimmy runs the water with you and checks the drain and supply connections under the sink for drips.

The $2,000 to $20,000 Spread, Explained

  • Project

    Countertop replacement

    Range$2,000 to $20,000
  • Project

Island downdraft cooktop with a pop-up vent, replaced

    Range$4,000 to $7,000
  • Project

    Full kitchen remodel, for comparison

    Range$12,000 to $25,000 for a typical kitchen

A short run of laminate along one wall sits at the low end of countertop work. A large kitchen with an island in quartz or granite, an undermount sink and a new tile backsplash sits much higher, because it takes far more material. Overhangs, edge profiles and each cutout add fabrication, and cabinets that need repair add carpentry. The full kitchen figure is there for the day new cabinets join the plan.

Jimmy prices every project in person at your home, never from a photo or a text. Project estimates are free and are usually scheduled in the evening.

The Small Choices on a Big Stone Top

Yes. The tops come off, and the new ones go on the same boxes, and the doors and finishes stay as they are. If new cabinets are on your list for the next few years, do them first: a slab is cut to fit the cabinets under it and won't move to a new set.

About 12 inches gives knees room at counter height. Past that, stone needs support underneath, such as brackets or a wider base, because a long unsupported edge can crack. The fabricator sets the limit for the slab you choose.

A square or eased edge gives a clean, modern line and is the simplest to fabricate. A bevel or a bullnose softens the corner, and a bullnose is kinder to hips and to small children. Ornate profiles, such as an ogee, require more fabrication. Every step up from the simplest edge adds to the price, so pick it when you pick the material.

Moving from laminate to stone is the natural time to do it. An undermount sink hangs below a polished cutout, so crumbs wipe straight into the bowl with no rim to catch them. It is simplest with a solid top like quartz or granite; laminate needs a special undermount edge, so a laminate top normally takes a drop-in sink.

A short stone splash or the strip along the old top comes off with it. A tile backsplash set down onto the old counter may chip at the bottom row when the top is removed. Replacing the tops is a good time to install a new tile backsplash, and Jimmy can price it alongside the tops.

It can be, with upkeep. Wood that stays wet swells and darkens, so the area around the sink needs regular oiling and a quick wipe-down after use. One way around it is to use butcher block on an island or at a baking station, with stone around the sink.
